New Computer Technology - When is enough, enough?

I know that you’re probably in love with new computer technology. You probably can’t wait to test out the newest toys on the market. But, as a small business computer consultant, you’re wasting valuable time. Your small business clients aren’t in the least interested in the newest technologies available – in fact, they have no desire at all to experiment.

Small business clients are focused on the here and now. They want to use what they already know works, and that’s what they want you to know as well. If you’ve been in a corporate environment then you’re already light years ahead, so don’t worry about whether you have the technical skills. Small businesses will be 12 to 18 months behind the technology available in most IT shops.

As you are trying to find clients and create relationships during the starting stages of your business, you’ll want to put 90% of your R&D time on the backburner for at least the first 3 to 6 months. Focusing on new computer technology instead of on finding clients can cost your precious time and money.
