Earth Science teachers - another TED video for you

Yes, I'm addicted to TED. (Is there a support group for that?) I just watched two more excellent TED videos this evening, the second being this one of Sylvia Earle talking about the shocking statistics of the dramatic decline of the health of our Oceans. Oh my...

This is an excellent lesson in the making. Send this to your favorite Earth Science teacher right away.

The Many Faces of Adobe Acrobat 9 Professional

I have written extensively about the new features in Adobe Acrobat 9 over the past several months and continue to be very excited with all of the possibilities. In fact recently I have done several presentations with a focus on using Adobe Acrobat 9 for digital asset distribution. As a faculty member, I have found the ability to create PDF Portfolio's indispensable for the work that I do. Now that I am able to embed videos, SWF files, Word documents and deliver it as one unified PDF file it has made my life that much easier for posting materials onto BlackBoard.

As much as Adobe Acrobat 9Professional has helped me, I have found Acrobat to be extremely important in the work that I do with students with motor impairments. For the past several years I have relied on Adobe Acrobat to allow me to create accessible worksheets and documents for students that have difficulty using pencil and paper. Whether, if I am converting a worksheet that was created from Microsoft Word or scanning a worksheet into Acroba,t having the rich feature set in Acrobat has allowed the students that I work with to complete the worksheets on the computer as their peers would. With Acrobat's Form Recognition feature I am able to quickly set up the worksheet without too much touching up. The Form Recognition feature automatically looks for underlines and will place field boxes so that the student can type into the worksheet. This feature alone has saved teachers an incredible amount of time as they set up the worksheet. Teachers can also manually add form fields as well as create dropdown boxes, radio buttons and checkbox buttons for students to respond with. Using the tabbing function the student can move from one field to another quite easily. And lets not forget that Acrobat 9 also supports text to speech which can be enabled within the document which can be turned on from the View menu. Adobe Acrobat 9 also makes it easy for students to zoom into an area without any degradation in the clarity of the fonts. Likewise, students can use the various annotation features built into Adobe Acrobat to markup the document. I have had students use the arrows to complete worksheets that have involved telling time as well as some who have used the stamp feature to respond on the worksheet. All told Adobe Acrobat 9 Professional can provide students with a way to access a worksheet or page on the computer that can be filled out. With the release of Adobe Acrobat 9 it is now possible to have the teacher set up the document and email it home so that the student can access it with the Adobe Acrobat Reader 9. It is important to note that if the teacher wants the student to have access to the annotation features, then when the PDF file is created you must select Extend Features in Adobe Reader.. from the Advanced menu.

While I'm sure the folks at Adobe did not intend to develop an assistive technology tool- Adobe Acrobat 9 has proven to be an incredible tool to provide students with a way to make worksheets accessible on the computer. To view a quick Jing screencast on using the Form Recognition feature in Adobe Acrobat click here.

Something new in Gmail

This isn't NEW news, by any means, but I was just admiring it so I thought I'd point it out in case you haven't yet seen it.

Have you ever attached a file and then sent the email before the file was truly attached? I have. Several times. It didn't tell you that it was working to attaching it, did it? NO! You thought it worked like desktop clients.

Well, it still doesn't work like a desktop client, but at least now when you attach a file you'll see a thermometer that shows the progress of the attachment. YES!!

The 14th Carnival of Computer Help and Advice

Welcome to the fourteenth monthly Carnival of Computer Help and Advice - a digest of recent blog articles that spread the wealth of PC knowledge.

First up this month we have the latest post from carnival-regular Andrew Edgington. He presents a guide to Adobe Photoshop Tricks For Absolute Beginners at Learn Photoshop Now.

Readers will no doubt have noticed that the popularity of Twitter is on the rise. The author of Homemaker Barbi, Danelle Ice, has kindly submitted a "quick and easy tutorial will show you how to capitalize your username on Twitter without losing your followers or tweets" in her How To Capitalize Your User Name on Twitter post.

While Twitter's fame is increasing Google's remains strong as they diversify their services. Nevertheless Google's core business is still their search engine, which Amal Bose lifts the lid on in the Google Secrets post at The Techies blog.

I will let the author of the next post introduce it themselves: Zenodice wrote "This is an article I wrote with tips on how to greatly improve firefox's performance as well as some custom code for the truly hardcore users. This will help any Firefox user improve their browser's performance greatly." The post How To: Tweak Firefox For Optimal Browsing Speed (Broadband) is available at The Nexus for anyone who needs to give Firefox a boost.

Talking of speed, Sara Schweiger published a tutorial about Removing Internet Speed Monitor at the Internet Speed Monitor Pro blog. Despite its name Internet Speed Monitor is actually a piece of adware, so her advice on removing it is most welcome.

Jules presents another piece of welcome advice in the article Change Storage Location for Attachments in Outlook Express that was posted at PCauthorities.com. This location is defined when the software is installed and is not easily changed, but Jules offers a step-by-step guide detailing how to do it.

Many people now have computers in a number of rooms in their homes. Ashan Jay explains How to connect two computers (dual screen) over network at the ashPresentom blog. Also, Carl Jagt of Carl Jagt's Tee of the Week fame presents his guide to 10 Great Portable Apps: Use Your USB Thumbdrive for Good for everyone who uses a variety of PCs.

If you are interested in hosting a future carnival please leave a comment on this post or use the contact form over at our Blog Carnival page where you can also submit your blog posts for inclusion. Don't worry, if you don't want to write the Carnival post I can do it for you.

See you all next month for another selection of posts.

Test Side Effects - Africa doesn't exist

Here's the gist of a conversation from today.

Upon hearing of a wonderful middle school project on Africa, this coach sent it off to her middle school teachers, suggesting that it would be a lot of fun, etc etc. The response she got back, "We wrote Africa out of the curriculum three years ago."

They are devoting more time to Western Civilization topics. Nobody else has picked up the topic, either, although one person does refer to it in a geography class.

This HAS to be because Africa doesn't appear on any state tests. Why else would you stop talking about the world's second largest continent? It has both the largest and the smallest countries, deserts, rain forests.. and AIDS, and Darfur, and ... oh my. We've heard speakers at TED talking about how Africa is the world's hottest emerging market, too.

Oh, and they're now debating removing the Middle East next. I HAVE to believe that SOMEBODY at the high school will at least address that topic, tho. Don't you? But, who will do Africa?

Can you hear me screaming? "Wait, Jim. Investigate first. Maybe they DID just shuffle it around to another grade."

Yes. That's it. That's what's happening. I overreacted. Hopefully.

IT Consulting Firm Thrives on Single-Point-of-Contact Value Proposition

Do you own an IT consulting firm? To develop sophisticated solutions and build lasting client relationships, you need to understand your clients' biggest business problems and be able to respond to their many needs.

Continuing relationships with clients are essential to the longevity of your business. These relationships help you get steady revenue so you don’t have to be on the edge of your seat wondering when you’ll be getting your next new project. These long-term clients also help you get the career satisfaction that comes from working with the same accounts for a long time and seeing your technology plans really work long term.

Developing relationships means understanding what your small business clients need and also knowing what they expect from you. A major part of what small business clients will need from your IT consulting firm is the guarantee of a single point of contact to make managing all elements of their complex IT infrastructures as simple as possible.

The following 4 tips can help you be a single point of contact for your clients, so you can build strong relationships that will be the foundation of a successful business.

1. Small Business Clients are Very Different than Fortune 1000 Clients. Fortune 1000 IT managers typically know enough about their computing environments to determine, at least on a basic level, which technology provider or vendor to call for various services. However small business owners and managers are largely non-technical. They are not career IT professionals and rarely have the skill set required to understand the many intricacies of their IT assets. Therefore, they will lean heavily on you to understand how to coordinate important technology issues.
2. Know What a Small Business Owner Wants to Understand. All a small business owner or manager usually knows or wants to know is that something is broken with his/her computer system and that your IT consulting firm is needed immediately. Your clients will not want finger pointing or someone that will pass the buck to multiple providers. They will want a simple, single point of accountability and will typically have the mindset, “I don’t care what the problem is … just fix it! Now! And the cost better be reasonable!”
3. Small Business Clients Need a Virtual IT Department. Your small business clients will usually not have formal IT departments. This means your IT consulting firm will have to step in and act as a virtual IT department. Even clients that have no idea of what a corporate IT department does or what “IT” means will generally expect the type of arrangement where you provide on-going maintenance, oversight and services. They want you to be a single point of contact for everything and anything even remotely related to supporting their systems and networks.
4. Know Which Services You Need to Provide. If you want to truly be a single point of contact, you need to know which responsibilities you will have. In a large IT organization, separate departments typically exist for the following services: help desk; network administration; desktop support; software development; standardization; research and development and security. However if you really want to be a single point of contact, your IT consulting firm will have to wear these multiple “hats” on any given day with your small business clients.

In this article we talked about 4 tips to help you be your IT consulting firm clients’ single point of contact. Learn more about how you can attract great, steady, high-paying clients to your IT consulting firm now at the attached link.

Satellite TV Vs Cable TV

Choosing the right choice for your home TV can be really tricky. People see all the online advertisement about Cable TV, and about satellite TV and every advertisement claim that its publisher offer best service, and best price. As such, it is very hard for consumers to know what is really the best in terms of quality, and price.

Current cable television customers know the reality of cable all too well: the bills keep getting bigger and the service keeps getting poorer.

Cable subscribers around the country are subject to constant rate hikes and some of the worst customer service of any industry in existence today. Two or three cable companies have a virtual monopoly on the market, and they seem oblivious to widespread dissatisfaction with their product, pricing, and support. Between taxes, monthly subscription fees, and equipment rental charges, cable subscribers are consistently paying far too much for the quality of the service they receive.

Satellite TV offers an alternative to these frustrations. With most retailers offering free installation, you can start enjoying satellite TV for as low as $24.99 a month! What's more, the satellite dish and receiver are yours to keep, so you won't need to pay a monthly rental charge or worry about returning the equipment if you move.

Satellite TV delivers 100% digital audio and video. Despite the incredible distance that the signal must travel before it reaches your television, the end result is still crystal clear and equal to any digital cable picture! As long as you have an unobstructed view of the southern sky, the only threat to the quality of your signal is very heavy rain or snow, which can occasionally interfere with reception. If you live in an area with frequent severe weather, you can always get a slightly larger dish to offset the interference.

But what about service? Not surprisingly, satellite TV wins there as well. The proof is in a study conducted by the respected research firm JD Power and Associates, which compared customer satisfaction with satellite TV providers and all the major cable companies. The results were clear -- both Direct TV and Dish Network received the highest possible scores in almost every category, including reliability, cost, and customer service. In contrast, the major cable companies' scores were not even close.

For expatriates, students, language buffs, and others, satellite TV is a great way to receive foreign-language programming. Both Direct TV and Dish Network offer foreign channels, though Dish Network currently has a greater selection of language choices, including Arabic, Russian, Korean and many others; VOOM does not currently offer any foreign channels. If you want to receive foreign programming, you will need to purchase a separate satellite dish, which must be aimed at different satellite than your standard dish.

From our experience, cable customers have one single advantage. They are always sure that they will get acceptable quality. If the company connects you with a cable, the signal certainly going to reach your home. However, if you use satellite TV, the signal quality depends on your location.

Free Anti Virus Software (Review)

Ever since the computer became a common place item in every household all over the world, antivirus software has become a necessity. Of course with such increasing demands for it, many software making companies are taking advantage and developing more and more antivirus engines for use in any electronic device that might need it. Choosing one that is suited to your needs is not easy due to the fact that there are plenty of options and all claim to be the best. However, for those who are on a budget or are looking for something easy on the pockets, free antivirus software is their only option. Even then, the choices are quite numerous. Your best bet in finding the best free antivirus software is to read free antivirus software reviews. I know, I know, you're thinking that these antivirus softwares must be no good when compared to the ones that you have to purchase. In a way, you are correct. However, many of these free antivirus softwares actually provide great protection.

Here's some free antivirus software reviews for you, based on the comments of people who have tried it for themselves.

1. AOL Active Virus Shield (Kaspersky Antivirus)

- This is an antivirus which was based on the leading paid antivirus program, the Kaspersky Antivirus Ver.6. It offers the best detection rates and updates itself frequently just as one would expect from Kaspersky products.

2. Avira AntiVir Personal Edition

- Installation was painless and the user interface has been improved since the release of the last version. The options are displayed in a very organized way, making it easy for the user to try it all as well as to switch to the "expert mode".

3. AVG Antivirus Free Edition

- Considered by many to be the most configurable of all the free antivirus softwares available in the internet. Though the variety of the choices might confuse first time users, it is still arguably the best when it comes to protection for your pc.

4. eTrust EZ Antivirus

- Although not completely free as it is only available for a 1 year trial from the Computer Associates site, it is still among the easiest to install as well as to maintain among all the antivirus softwares. The user interface is very easy to understand and it also provides the user with the necessary information and even links out to other resources in the event that it is necessary.

5. Avast 4 Home Edition

- This antivirus is among the most rich in terms of features when compared to other free antivirus software. It monitors many of the overlooked potential virus entry points such as through your mail and through instant messengers. It is also very configurable and would provide the user with many great features such as the antivirus screensaver which would run the virus scan while your screensaver is active.

So there you have it folks, five of the free antivirus software reviews that would help you in choosing free antivirus software that would meet all your standards as well as your computer's needs. Remember, just because its free it doesn't mean they are no good.

Where has all my hard-drive space gone? - Reloaded

Just as you can never have enough cupboard space in your home, you can never have enough hard-drive space. Nevertheless, occasionally we all have to sort through our storage and throw out a few things to make some more room. This is often easier said than done when it comes to your PC as it is not always clear what is taking up all the space.

The free version of TreeSize provides a graphical representation of how much hard-drive space your folders are using. Simply right-click on a particularly bloated folder and click on 'Explore' from the menu. This will open up that folder so you can set about deleting any files that are surplus to requirement. Remember to empty the recycle bin when you are finished. I would suggests that you leave the 'Program Files' and 'Windows' folders alone unless you know what you are doing.

If you use Internet Explorer you may want to delete its cache of temporary files. From the 'Tools' menu select 'Internet Options.' If you use IE version 6 or earlier, click on the 'Delete Files' button. For later versions click the button marked 'Delete...' in the 'Browsing History' section. Click the 'Delete Files' button on the box that opens. You will then be asked whether you are sure, click 'Yes.' Deletion of all the temporary internet files may take a while.
In Firefox, go to the 'Tools' menu and select 'Options..' Click on the 'Advanced' icon. Click on the 'Network' tab. There you will find a button labelled 'Clear now', pressing this will empty the cache.
Also, the save files of many computer games can be quite large. You may want to delete a few of these and the best way to do so is within the game. Usually this facility is located on the 'load game' screen. See these related posts for more ways to recover drive space:-

Software Consultancy Tips for Selling Virus Protection Support Contracts

Do you own a software consultancy? And do you want to really build solid relationships with your clients?

One of the easiest ways to do this is to offer long-term support contracts that focus on data protection including virus and malware protection, firewalls, encryption, power protection, and data backup. You need to get clients that are willing to sign long-term agreements with you if you want to get steady revenue. And one of the best ways to communicate the value of these agreements to your clients is by focusing on protection from debilitating, business-crippling computer viruses.

You need to communicate the importance of proactive maintenance to your software consultancy clients to protect them from unscheduled downtime that can cripple their businesses, hijack their networks, cause critical data loss, steal revenue, and even lead to catastrophic business shutdown and failure.

The following 3 tips can help you communicate the importance of virus protection as part of on-going maintenance to your valued clients… and encourage them to sign the long-term agreements you need to help you build relationships, revenue and your business.

1. Stay on Top of the Latest Computer Viruses. New computer viruses crop up almost every day, so make sure you’re informed of those that might impact your software consultancy clients. Viruses are so common and destructive that they make newspaper headlines as companies stop to address fast-spreading tech problems and warn other business owners and technology professionals. Pay attention to Web sites devoted to educating IT pros about the latest viruses. And use information – even horror stories! – you find to explain to your clients the importance of keeping their virus protection software up to date and the insurance your on-going maintenance agreements can provide.

2. Encourage Your Software Consultancy Clients to Follow Your Recommendations. Some of the most straightforward advice you can offer as your clients’ technology expert is to delete e-mail from unknown parties without opening it and to never, ever open e-mail attachments they were not expecting. In addition, stress that updating virus protection software on a daily basis is essential to protecting against catastrophic system failures and data loss. You need to explain to them why they need to update software constantly – again, with horror stories when necessary – and make overseeing this process an important part of your long-term maintenance agreements.

3. Remember that Some Computer Viruses Will Be Unavoidable. Even if your software consultancy clients keep their software up-to-date and follow all of your recommendations, some computer viruses will be unavoidable. Everyone will get zapped by a virus at some point. The good news is that when you are offering on-going, proactive support to your clients through maintenance agreements, you will be connected to your clients in a way that will allow you to jump on emergencies and minimize downtime. As a trusted technology advisor, you will be paid to walk your clients through the process of debugging a sick computer, or go on-site to solve bigger, more dangerous problems. Virus prevention is ideal; but when you build solid relationships with clients through on-going software maintenance contracts you gain a real understanding of their systems as well as develop a plan of attack that will help protect them from extended downtime, even when viruses hit home.

In this article we talked about 3 tips to help you communicate the importance of virus protection, so you can sell on-going agreements to your software consultancy clients. Learn more about how you can attract great, steady, high-paying clients to your software consultancy now at the attached link.

The Coolest Bridge

The coolet bridge In Leeuwarden, Netherlands they enjoy the comforts of a robotic overlord controlling a road bridge. It looks less like a bridge than a giant transformer crouching next to the river, holding down a thin spatula of road surface. From the road lines on the bridge arm it looks like cars just drive over the entire surface of the thing. It’s a smart solution for a small bridge, even though its size is a bit ungainly, and they somehow thought painting cute post-modern pastel colors was interesting.

Coolest Bluetooth Bracelet

Just use the Bluetooth bracelet as you would a normal Bluetooth device if you missed a few calls on your cell phone because it was on silent mode or you just didn't hear your mobile phone ring. it is very simple and very straight forward to use. The Bluetooth bracelet vibrates when you receive calls and displays the caller ID's number so you can decide whether or not you want to fish your phone out of your pocket or bag. If you are too busy to take calls then just press the function button to reject the call, thereby allowing you to pay more attention to your meeting. This Bluetooth bracelet not only looks cool, but also makes your busy life just that much easier to handle. For now though, this design works, the look may be simplistic, but it’s not gaudy either. You can purchase it for $26.

STOP NOW!! WATCH THIS!!

Watch this TED video. Right now.

A couple of weeks ago I watched a live broadcast of this session. When it was over I stood in front of my computer and applauded for these kids. This is simply astounding. Here is the background of it:

"The Teresa Carreño Youth Orchestra contains the best high school musicians from Venezuela's life-changing music program, El Sistema. Led here by Gustavo Dudamel, they play Shostakovich's Symphony No. 10, 2nd movement, and Arturo Márquez' Danzón No. 2."

Read more about it here. Then, pass this link along to every music teacher you know. This youth symphony is unlike anything you're likely to hear in your lifetime. Make sure you watch both pieces. See if you, too, don't leap to your feet when it's over.

A few days ago I mentioned this project that was conducted by some students at Springfield High School here in PA. What an event it was, too. A major step into being creators and managers of content/news, and taking charge of their learning. Very cool.

Now comes this blog. SHSPresidential Watch blog. Here, students will be posting questions, thoughts, and observations to the blog and replying to comments on their posts. How will this develop for them? I'm anxious to see. When they get a chance to reply to a comment, I'm anxious to see if they do so thoughtfully, respectfully, and in a way that might even promote further discussion.

I like this. They have to be aware of the news in order to post meaningful and timely messages, and at the same time try to be neutral in their position. Nice. What do you think? Would YOUR class like to get involved? Start with the comments. What if your class came up with a Point/CounterPoint position and made two comments? Who knows what might develop from there.

Just imagine this... an iphone for everyone

What would the U.S. be like if we had the same sort of phone plans that they have in some European countries where you buy a phone and THEN choose your carrier? In yesterday's workshop I asked the teachers who had an iPhone. Not one! Why? No ATT&T service out there.

Just imagine what life would be like if we all had the option of an iPhone. Wow!

Then, add to that dream the notion of a jailbroken version, and people writing apps and making it an absolutely KILLER device. Dare we dream. Set the world free to develop for it and you won't be able to keep them on the shelves. Yes, they're developing now, but they're restricted. Just imagine, tho', how VERY powerful that would be.

What's happening with the Android phone anyway?

Another TED video to watch

http://www.ted.com/talks/barry_schwartz_on_our_loss_of_wisdom.html

Here is another great TED video that I think is VERY well worth your time to watch. He gets a standing ovation from the audience at the end - no easy task, I'd think.

In particular, listen to his comments at the end when he talks about schools.

Very interesting, I think. In a world gone mad with rules and 'incentives' his thoughts paralleled mine, and apparently those of the audience, as well.

Papershow in Action

Today I had the good fortune of working with teachers from the East Brunswick Public Schools as part of their Professional Development In-service Program. Well over 100 teachers spent a full day with me as we explored a range of new tools and strategies to help address the needs of all learners in their classrooms. It was very exciting for me to see the lights go off as I introduced them to Web 2.0 technologies as as free tools that they could start using tomorrow in their classroom. A lot has changed since I entered the field of assistive technology and it is really incredible how much can be done and accomplished with some of the new Web 2.0 technologies to help address reading, writing, and math. During my presentation I introduced the teachers to Google Doc's, NaturalReader, MyWebspiration, as well as technologies that could take text and convert them to MP3 files. You could see the wheels were turning as the teachers reflected on their students.

During the presentation I brought along Papershow, to demonstrate for the teachers. I quickly realized just how powerful a tool this could be when doing presentations. With Papershow I could quickly write down a website or any other information that I wanted to share and have it viewed through my data projector. Throughout the day, I used Papershow and it worked flawlessly- I just have to remember to bring along a spare AAA battery for the pen. I was impressed that the software did alert me that the battery was low. In any case having Papershow, was like having a portable interactive whiteboard that I could write on and share my ideas. To read more about my experiences with Papershow click here.

You can take a look at the ground that I covered today in the workshop by viewing my Google Presentation. If you or your school are interested in having me come out and do a workshop or presentation on this topic please feel free to email me.

Gmail address book gets needed improvement

If you've ever tried to add someone to the address book of gmail then you know how frustrating that is - or, rather, WAS. They've made a HUGE improvement to it that I just now experienced.

I went to change an address but was told that I could do it because it already existed. ARGH! But this time it showed both entries AND a link that allowed me to merge them. WOOHOO!! With one click it showed me both addresses, each with a remove button next to it that allowed me to remove the one with the old address. Two clicks was all it took to get this issue resolved. Very nice.

How Computer Shops Differentiate with Superior Customer Service

Owners of computer shops understand that their industry is very competitive. How can you stay technologically up-to-date and still focus on customers?

The biggest mistake those that own computer shops make is spending too much time on gadgets and gizmos or the latest, greatest operating system or product. In order to run a profitable business, you have to focus on the relationships you build with your valued customers. Truly understanding your customer will help you provide better services. And when you can provide superior service, you will truly stand out from the competition.

The following 3 tips can help you provide excellent customer service, so you can stand out from the crowd.

1. Find Out What Makes Your Best Customers Tick... And Ticked. The more you learn about your customers, and their needs, and their frustrations, the better you will be able to serve them. Remember, a satisfied customer is more likely to become a loyal, long-term client.

2. Survey Your Former Customers. The term “lost customer” refers to a customer that has opted to go to one of your competitors. You can learn a lot from these people; often they can tell you exactly where you went wrong. Face your fears and confront these people. Why did you lose their business? Make sure you are keeping all old mailing lists so you can get in touch with those you lose. Send a survey card, do a phone survey or provide a toll-free number or e-mail address. Customers can give feedback on what was lacking in their experiences with you. This approach can help you make changes to keep more customers … and sometimes even bring some lost customers back to you.

3. Inspire Customer Loyalty. Loyal customers are very cost effective. Often these customer will refer other clients to your business who will also be loyal and high quality. These loyal customers are incredibly important and become your bread and butter, stable revenue-building clients. Focus time and money on keeping customers happy and inspiring them to stick with you. Ask them directly about their biggest computer and business problems. While competitors with computer shops might be able to duplicate your products, when you inspire your customers, you ensure these competitors can’t duplicate your level of service.

In this brief article, we talked about how computer shops can set themselves apart from their competitors by providing excellent customer service. Learn more about how you can attract great, steady, high-paying clients to your computer shop now at the attached link.

The Inaugural Project Summary

Thanks to Rob Nelson for taking the time to write this article. I had posted about it before, and had encouraged you to participate. I hope you did. Now, Rob talks about how the day went. I sure wish I could have been there. (Sorry this took so long to post, Rob. I hurried you just so you could wait. :-) )
-----
"Four years ago, one of my 8th grade students participated in a career project, his career goal was to become a reporter. Just three weeks ago I found myself talking to the same student, it was five in the morning, he was in the school, I was in Washington and we were ready to broadcast live.

On January 20th, Springfield High School, in Pennsylvania hosted a project designed to engage as many students as possible in a discussion on Barack Obama’s historic inauguration. This project started off as an idea for a video documentary during the student’s yearly Close-Up trip to Washington DC that coincided with the Inauguration. Government teacher Bill McRae thought that this would be an excellent opportunity to get some primary source materials in a video format for this historic event. As the event got closer, Mr. McRae began to share his ideas with the Classrooms for the Future coach and Dave Jurkiewicz, our Video Production teacher. By the end of the brainstorming, a simple documentary had evolved into a documentary news project that would ultimately involve 10-15 teachers, 200-300 students, 3 distinct venues, and 20 to 30 short student produced videos that spanned the content areas. All of the resources were made available using web tools such as Blogger, TeacherTube, and Ustream that teachers can, provided they are not blocked by content filters, access free of charge and at their discretion.

This was a people project. It is true that we used abundant technological resources and we really would not have been able to take it as far as we did without the cameras, laptops, blogs, and Internet resources but in the end it was about the experience the students gained and the knowledge and practice that came with that experience. As the project progressed and, in one students words, “We found out how big it was”; we saw just how energetic, innovative, and filled with initiative our students truly were. They became real world problem solvers as they anticipated potential problems to avoid as well as developing solutions to overcome existing challenges.

“It’s amazing” was the quote from one news anchor after spending an hour and a half with the students on January 20th. Time after time reporters commented on how realistic the preparations were for the project. To quote Bill Mcrae,” We just got out of the kids way”. The authentic nature of the project allowed students to make connections that they would not ordinarily have made. Broadcast journalism students filmed other students conducting math lessons that focused on how experts figured out the crowds on the mall. Government students honed interview techniques as they prepared for trips to the National Constitution Center and Washington DC. Time after time students commented on how the project based approach enhanced their understanding and appreciation of the events. Just the other day, one of the students who went to Washington told me that “I miss it.” “Yeah, the trip was fun” I responded, assuming that she meant the trip itself. “No,” the student corrected,” I mean the whole project, I miss working, and getting ready, it was exciting.”

It’s not done yet…keep an eye out for shspresidentialwatch"

How to save paper when printing pdf files

In these days of environmental concern and financial insecurity every little helps, including being able to save paper when printing documents. The Portable Document Format is an incredibly popular file format that can be viewed in Acrobat Reader (developed by the inventors of the file format, Adobe) and in other more lightweight applications, such as the excellent Foxit Reader. Both these programs support printing more than one page of the pdf onto one sheet of paper, as explained below:

Adobe Acrobat
Pull down the 'File' menu and select 'Print'.
On the 'Print' window pull down the drop-down list marked 'Page Scaling' and select 'Multiple pages per sheet'.

Use the other settings to adjust how many pages appear on each sheet. I do not suggest selecting any more than two as this may make the text too small to read. Use the preview on the 'Print' window to make sure that your selections are correct.

You can also select the order in which the pages are placed on the sheet. Setting this to 'Horizontal' will put the first page on the left and the second on the right of the printed sheet, and so on for the rest.

You can also print a border round the page and rotate the pages should you desire by ticking the appropriate boxes.

If the version of Acrobat Reader doesn't have this facility, you can upgrade to the latest version for free. These instructions should also apply for the latest versions of Acrobat Reader on Mac OSX and Linux.

Foxit Reader
The process is pretty much the same in Foxit Reader; although, the interface is slightly different.

Pull down the 'File' menu and select 'Print'.
On the 'Print' window pull down the drop-down list marked 'Page Arrange' and select 'Multiple pages per sheet'.

Select how many pages you want to appear on each printed sheet. As with Acrobat, two is probably the best choice.

Set the page order. Usually this will be 'Horizontal'.

Make sure that 'Auto-Rotate' and 'Auto-Center' are ticked.

Tick the 'Print Page Border' box if you want to have each page appear in a box; although you may consider this to be a waste of ink.

Foxit Reader also has a preview of what the first page will look like on the Print window, so you can confirm that your selections are correct.

Intel's X58 Chipset

Hey everyone, this is Icarus here with some thought on the new Intel X58 chipset.

The Intel X58 chipset was released during November of 2008, and was released as a successor of X48. Now, the importance here is not just the name itself; this is a direct challenge to all of the computer hardware companies out there that have been making large amounts of money off of nVidia chipset motherboards. Now, how does this effect you, the consumer who has sparked an interest in computer hardware?

Well, here's the thing: the X58 chipset can run SLI. Yes, I just said that: it can run SLI. For those of you who don't know what SLI is, I will explain it in another article today. For now, I will just say that SLI is a program created by NVidia that allows the computer to run more than one video card at the same time.

Now, why does SLI in the X58 matter so much? Well here's the reason why: it takes away a valuable advantage NVidia chipsets had over Intel chipsets. Traditionally, Intel chipsets were only able to run Crossfire and CrossfireX, or just a single NVidia video card without SLI. NVidia chipsets, on the other hand, can only run NVidia Graphics cards(with the exception of patches for some ATI graphics cards) but can run two in SLI and even three in TriSLI. However, now that the X58 can run NVidia graphics cards(GPU's), more consumers will begin to turn to this chipset.

Now, NVidia loses more than one battle here. One of NVidia chipsets motherboards' main concerns for consumers was the price tag. The fact is, that many NVidia chipset motherboards are more expensive than the Intel chipset motherboards. However, this was justifiable because NVidia still had the SLI and TriSLI advantage over Intel chipsets. Now that the X58 chipset can run NVidia GPU's in SLI, NVidia has lost one advantage, and lots its justification for the price tags. And because most consumers only go as far as running two graphics cards in SLI, NVidia may lose a lot of loyal customers.

However, this does not mean that NVidia will fade away or go bankrupt. X58 chipset motherboards can run two graphics cards in SLI, but it cannot run three graphics cards in SLI. NVidia can; therefore, NVidia still gets to keep the enthusiast market under its arms. Another advantage NVidia still has is its apparent ability to overclock better than Intel chipsets. While this advantage may seem to be mysterious because most consumers do not know why this is so, this is still an advantage that NVidia will hold onto. Therefore, NVidia will still be able to keep most of the consumers who know how to overclock well.

PA Reps want to ban pagers and cell phones from schools

First, thanks to an anonymous source for sharing this with me today via twitter.

Dateline Feb 11, 2009. PA House Bill 363 is introduced and sent to committee. Read it here.

What it does want to do? Here:

13

Section 1317.1. Possession of [Telephone Pagers] Electronic

14

Devices Prohibited.--(a) The possession by students of

15

telephone paging devices, commonly referred to as beepers,

16

cellular telephones and portable electronic devices that record

17

or play audio or video material shall be prohibited on school

18

grounds, at school sponsored activities and on buses or other

19

vehicles provided by the school district.

If you are opposed to this idea, perhaps you might email your Rep (http://tinyurl.com/pareps) and let them know. These folks are the ones who sponsored it: INTRODUCED BY Cruz, Youngblood, Mustio, Caltagirone, Kortz,Reichley, Readshaw, Sabatina, Siptroth, and Thomas

On twitter, @rkiker said, "Who carries pagers anymore, anyway?" Very true. And THAT speak volumes to the understanding of those who sponsored the bill?

OK, folks, go here and find your rep and let them know what you think.

Oh my. With ALL of the problems facing this state on SO many fronts, what a shame to waste even one minute discussing this.

Update (2-12-09, 10:45PM)
Lots of folks are up in arms over this one. This blog post (from Dan Callahan) pointed me to this petition that you can sign if you, too, are against this bill.

Barack Obama & His Blackberry

President Barack Obama has two addictions: cigarettes and his BlackBerry cell phone. While his wife leans on him to give up the cigarettes, his staff aides have been insisting he retire the cell phone.

There is very little doubt that Obama will give up his trusty Blackberry, however, the Secret Service will deal with him about that. Because, he has to use secured communications, so that no one can eavesdrop on his conversations. This is just one of many changes that will take place in his life that he will have to get used to.If he didn't want the restrictions and boundaries then he shouldn't have have ran for President. It is the Secret Service's job to protect him and his family, and they have rules and regulations, that have to be followed to protect him and his family.

Under the arrangement, a super-encryption package will be added to Obama's BlackBerry, giving the most powerful person on the planet on-the-go access to e-mail. According to Press Secretary Robert Gibbs, "use will be limited." Obama will only be able to e-mail senior staff, Gibbs told reporters, as well as "a small group of personal friends."

It's a security risk and that it's impossible for someone to track the Blackberry phone's GPS location. Perhaps if they can completely disable the GPS capability of the phone. Even then there's the issue of the email. Email is almost never truly secure due to all of the places it goes through between source and destination.

The highest level of encryption for BlackBerrys currently used by top-level government officers is Secret, and (as the most visible target for hackers) Obama's security needs are higher. For instance, a BlackBerry can become a homing device broadcasting its user's location, or it can be hacked to act as a remote microphone, in addition to more standard e-mail and voice-communication prying.

Obama has said his BlackBerry allows him to more easily get around the bubble that presidents find themselves in. "They're going to pry it out of my hands," he told one interviewer before the compromise was reached.

The president has been adamant about continuing to use a BlackBerry, which has Internet and e-mail access, despite concerns that likely have made the National Security Agency as nervous as the Secret Service on Inauguration Day when Obama left his presidential limo twice to walk and wave to crowds along Pennsylvania Avenue.

Obama's main interest is an e-mail, can be a two-edged sword. The Freedom of Information Act and the Presidential Records Act of 1978 require that e-mails relating to official business be preserved as public records. The informal nature of such e-mails can lead to embarrassment or worse.

Security analyst at the nonprofit Information Technology & Innovation Foundation in Washington, said Obama is probably using the Sectera Edge even though Gibbs called it a BlackBerry, because BlackBerry has become an almost generic term used to refer to a number of handhelds.

Despite new talk about encryption, a security expert said the main issue about how the president would use his superencrypted BlackBerry is whether it was being used for contact with people outside government. If Obama wanted to reach an outsider via the BlackBerry, then the person getting his messages would need to have a BlackBerry equipped with super-de-cryption capabilities

Obama is well known for his BlackBerry addiction, something millions of Americans can identify with. The Blackberry, with several models available, is the best-selling smartphone in the United States, heavily favored by corporate culture for its robust features and physical QWERTY keyboards that are considered superior for mobile e-mail.

The President & BlackBerry - Obama will need all the help he can get in managing the presidential workload. It hardly seems in the public interest to deprive him of communications devices and productivity tools that millions of Americans take for granted in their own lives. Does Obama really have to give up his beloved BlackBerry?....

Tips to Remove a Computer Virus

There probably are few things more annoying than having a computer virus. People who rely on their computer for social networking can really have their personal lives affected without a computer every day. Other people who rely on their computer to run an Internet business can be in big trouble if a virus takes over their computer.

In this article let's talk about how to remove a computer virus regardless of the reasons why you need it done.

1. First of all relax and understand that whether you are technically inclined or not you can probably do this yourself. Removing a computer virus is not something that is necessarily hard to do.

2. You will need to purchase an antivirus software program and install it before you can begin to remove your virus. There are many antivirus software programs that you can pick from.

Because of how important this is to you, you do not want to cut corners on the antivirus software you purchase. You can research online to determine which ones come highly recommended.

3. After you have purchased your software it is time to install it. This is as simple as installing a CD and following the directions. It will lead you step by step and you do not need any technical expertise to do it.

4. Once your software is installed you will want to perform a full scan of your computer. This is where you will find and remove any viruses that are currently infecting your computer.

5. There are thousands of potential viruses that can infect a computer so you may still have a problem. To get rid of your current virus you can run a utility called a stinger from: http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

This utility will get rid of major viruses and it is an .exe file which means when you open it, it will clean out your computer automatically. It is created by Mcafee and it updates the utility to add more virus definitions each week.

Simply go to the site and download the file. Then copy it on a disc and bring it to the infected computer. Then open the file and let it go to work on removing the virus in your computer.

If this still fails to clean up the computer virus you will probably have to take it to a professional and have them look at it for you. Another option is if you have a friend who is computer savvy and possibly they can help you.
