IT Consulting: What Non-IT Skills Do You Need?

You may love working on computers and networks but running your own company will take more than good IT skills. You will need a variety of skills to market and manage your business successfully.

Data Management

Keeping up with your schedule and the status of projects as well as billing and payroll can be challenging even for the most experienced business people. You will need to be able to keep up with all of this and more as your own boss.

Verbal Skills

Being able to speak well and interview well on the phone is one of the most important steps to selling yourself. You will also need these same skills when negotiating with vendors and offering technical support.

Public Speaking

Everyone hates public speaking, but this can be the real key to getting your business off the ground. When you can speak to local business men and women about IT services and your company, then you will be networking and enhancing your ability to sell to those in the audience.

Writing

Finally, writing is essential. Always check, double check, even triple check, your grammar and punctuation. Even if you are just writing an email, your professionalism will be based not only on what you write but how you write.
