IT Marketing: Establishing Credibility

Establishing credibility can be a bit challenging if you only have a couple of references. Ask your clients to put their references on their company letterhead and include specific examples about how you helped their business - saved them money, streamlined IT operations, etc.

If you don't have any references yet, you can get them by volunteering. Help out a couple of your favorite nonprofits and receive experience and references in return. This will be especially helpful if the nonprofit is well-known in your community.

Asking for a referral may be intimidating at first but it's easy. Always ask as someone's giving you a compliment. For example, if you walk in and hear, “This is amazing. Our remote offices can talk to each other and we cut down on $5,000 in leased line charges and we're doing it all over inexpensive DSL. You guys are terrific.” You can easily ask for a testimonial here; also ask if they know of anyone else who could benefit from your services.
