Dual-Core Fault-Tolerant Servers by NEC

On Wednesday, NEC Solutions plans to roll out their brand new line of fault-tolerant servers equipped with dual-core Xeon processors. The new server has a 3.2-GHz system, a 3.6-GHz system, and a 2.8-GHz dual-core system. The servers will have up to 8 Gbytes of memory for the 3.2 GHz system, and 16 Gbytes of memory for the 3.6 GHz and 2.8 GHz systems.

After rolling out this line of servers, NEC Solutions will begin developing systems in a joint effort with Stratus Technologies, Inc. Both NEC and Stratus Technologies develop fault-tolerant servers which promise continuous system availability 99.999% of the time. The two companies entered a 10-year agreement in November to work together to develop a new, innovative line of servers.

Dick Csaplar, product manager for NEC, says, "We market our servers on the total cost of ownership. The hardware is slightly more expensive than clustered hardware, but when you add in the need in clusters for additional software and potential losses due to failure and downtime, that cost equation flips over."
