Starting a business requires a LOT of paperwork. Is it worth it? Yes. Can it be complicated? Yes. Will you survive? A resounding, Yes! To make things a little easier, here is a list of things you need to do to start your business.
Register a Name
To start a business, you will need to choose a business name and register it with the state. You will have to pay a fee to get a business certificate, and then the state will know to expect your tax money.
Check Zoning
Local zoning laws must be evaluated before beginning your business. When starting a home-based business, this is especially important.
Conform to Code
State and federal codes, such as the Americans with Disabilities Act, will also come into play. Businesses with 15 or more employees must provide access to all people, regardless of physical handicaps.
Obtain an EIN
If you will have employees, you must apply for an EIN with the IRS. You must also file with the state Department of Labor to pay unemployment tax, disability, and state income taxes.
Apply for a Resale Tax Number
If you will be selling anything, you must apply for a resale tax number with the state.
Obtain Required Licenses
Other licenses may be required to start a computer consulting business. The state computer association can tell you which licenses or permits you will need.
