I wouldn't say that this list comprises "essential" tools, but there are some on here that I've never heard of and that look like fun. Our job is to make sure that it's MORE than fun, however. :-)

This Google Site has been set up by Dr. Helen Barrett to focus on the use of Google Apps to create ePortfolios. On this site, there are instructions on how to use the different elements of Google Apps to maintain e-portfolios.
Create Video Playlists and Embed Them Anywhere | Embedr
Embedr is a free service that lets anyone create a custom playlist of videos from the top video sites on the web. I'm told that this will play the videos even if youtube is blocked - BUT DON'T TELL ANYONE!!!
